TECHNICAL EXCURSIONS
Take the opportunity to experience two of Vienna’s flagship energy projects during an exclusive technical excursion on Friday, 27 November 2026. Kindly supported by Wien Energie, the excursion provides valuable insights into innovative technologies that are shaping the future of Europe’s energy system – from the production of green hydrogen to sustainable district heating.

Electrolysis plant for hydrogen production
and injection into the grid
Hydrogen is considered one of the key technologies for achieving climate neutrality and strengthening Europe’s future energy supply. Participants will visit Wien Energie’s pioneering hydrogen production facility in Vienna-Simmering.
Commissioned in 2024, the 3 MW electrolysis plant produces up to 1,300 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, using electricity exclusively from renewable sources such as wind, solar and hydropower. The hydrogen is supplied to mobility and industrial applications, demonstrating how renewable gases can contribute to a secure and sustainable energy system. The site also features a hydrogen refuelling station for buses and heavy-duty vehicles, illustrating the complete value chain from production to application.
Large-Scale Heat Pump
The excursion also includes a visit to Wien Energie’s innovative large-scale heat pump, a key component of Vienna’s strategy to decarbonise its district heating network.
The facility uses environmental and waste heat to produce sustainable district heating for thousands of households. By recovering energy that would otherwise remain unused, the plant significantly reduces CO₂emissions while improving the efficiency of Vienna’s heating infrastructure. As one of Europe’s pioneering projects, it demonstrates how innovative technologies can support a climate-neutral and resilient energy future.
